“Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.”
—A.N Whitehead
As a decorative motif and as content, patterns have drawn my attention for years. We are the pattern-making, pattern-seeking creature, and patterns speak to us at very deep levels. At their most basic level, patterns are about similarities and relationships. We are meant to explore and at times to disrupt them, but not, I think, to surrender to them.
I develop patterns using a range of techniques and I use them in a variety of applications. Some of these are collaborative, some are highly technical, some are very interpretive and intuitive. Lately I’ve been using an application called Repper to enhance my process.
