Shortly before he died, writer and scholar Langdon Gilkey mentioned to me that he had recently taken up a regular practice of drawing. I was surprised that a person of words would find this practice so captivating. There’s something to how direct the connection is between instrument and body that gives drawing its immediacy. Even when there is some sort of digital intervention, it’s the spark of life that leaves its mark.
